Why website traffic does not convert: read the questions

A SaaS site can get the right visitors and still not convert, because the pages never answer the question people actually ask. Made-up examples, the kind of thing a chat log shows.

The analytics say people came, stayed, and left. The chat, if you have one, often says why. These questions are made up. They are the shape of what a small SaaS site hears, not a customer’s words.

Four questions the page missed

“Do you have a trial?” The homepage talks about the product for three screens and never says. The visitor is ready to try it and cannot find the door.

“Is SSO on the smaller plan?” Pricing lists plan names and a feature grid that says “advanced security” on one of them. The visitor is comparing you with two other tools tonight. They will not book a call to learn which row they need.

“Can I export leads to HubSpot?” The site says “we integrate with the tools you use.” That sentence is true and useless. The visitor has a stack already. They need a yes or a no.

“Will this replace our helpdesk?” Some of the traffic is the wrong fit. A clear answer sends them away faster, which is a kindness, and it stops a demo that was never going to close.

None of these people are a mystery. The page answered a nearby question and missed the one they brought.

Sort a week of questions

Read a week of questions and sort them into three piles:

  • The thing your pages should say in public.
  • The thing a short survey can ask, such as team size, once someone is actually looking.
  • The thing that means they are ready to talk, such as a start date or a seat count.

Engage puts the short questions on the page and keeps the reason with the lead. How the assistant answers from your own pages is on Features.

Knosite answers your visitors from your own pages and tells you who is ready to buy, and why.
